Heathrow Airport emergency after two planes collide into each other on the ground

Emergency crews have been called to Heathrow after two passenger planes collided on the runway.

The incident took place at just before 8pm this evening and involved Korean Air flight KE908.

It is understood to have scraped the side of an Icelandair aircraft while taxiing at the London airport.

Footage of the aftermath of the crash has appeared on Twitter.

Heathrow has since confirmed that the collision took place, but said it wasn't "full on" and that emergency crews were "attending to ensure all passengers and crew are safe and well”.

The Met Police later said "enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing".

A passenger tweeted soon after the crash: "I'm on the flight they are blocking.

"We were taxiing to the runway and then suddenly got stopped by all these emergency services.

"We are now being told we are returning to the gate due to a technical issue."

They added in a separate tweet: "I was watching out the window while we taxied and I'm pretty sure we scrapped another with our wing tip."

Another passenger on the Korean Air flight told the Daily Star: "I was watching out the window thinking we were awful close to the tail for a parked plane.

"And then it looked like we grazed it.

"The captain hasn't really told us much except we are going back to the gate due to a technical issue.

"But the last communication was about 45 mins ago."

He added: "The crew are keeping quiet.

"They are waiting for the captain - there is no chance this flight is taking off tonight."

A video posted by former journalist Steve Smith shows around five emergency service vehicles on the scene, but he said there was "no fire".

He wrote: "Got to be 4 or 5 different emergency service vehicle with blue lights flashing on the tarmac."

"No injuries have been reported but emergency services are attending to ensure all passengers and crew are safe and well.”

A spokesman for the Met Police said: "Emergency services including police, fire services and Heathrow Airport staff are on scene following a minor collision involving two aircraft on the airside at around 19:53hrs on Wednesday, 28 September.

"Passengers have disembarked from both. There are no reported injuries.
