Heathrow Airport has asked airlines to cancel 30 flights from Thursday’s schedule for the “safety” of passengers.

The airport said it is expecting passenger numbers to exceed capacity during the peak morning period.

In a statement provided to the Standard, the airport said: “To keep everyone safe we have asked airlines to remove 30 flights from the morning peak for tomorrow only.

“We will work with airlines to get affected passengers rebooked onto other flights outside of the peak so that as many as possible can get away tomorrow, and we apologise for the impact this has on travel plans.

“We are working hard to ensure everyone has a smooth journey through Heathrow this summer, and the most important thing is to make sure that all service providers at the airport have enough resources to meet demand.”

A total of 1200 flights are scheduled to leave throughout Thursday from the major London airport.

Heathrow said individual airlines would contact people who are affected.

It comes just weeks after the airport asked airlines to cancel 10 per cent of flights amid baggage handling equipment issues.

Heathrow asked airlines flying from Terminals 2 and 3 to cancel 10 per cent of their flights after a technical glitch caused baggage problems.

Around 5,000 passengers on approximately 30 flights are believed to have been impacted.

Hundreds of passengers were left waiting for up to three hours to retrieve their luggage amid the chaos.
