Heartstopper fans go wild as Netflix posts cryptic message hinting at new season

A year ago, fans were welcomed into the lives of Heartstopper's Charlie and Nick as they navigated teen romance and the trials and tribulations that come with your first love.

The show was praised for addressing LGBTQ+ coming-of-age stories, including trans characters, bisexuality and the bullying that still happens for many young gay people around the world.

Based on comics of the same name, Heartstopper was an instant hit and has become a beloved show with fans waiting eagerly for news of when they might see the second season.

On the anniversary of the show first airing, Netflix tweeted a little video and hinted that more news might be following soon with a cryptic "tomorrow" followed by the leaves emoji, often used in reference to the show.

Fans are desperate for Heartstopper information (Netflix)

Netflix wrote: "One year ago today we said “hi” to Heartstopper S1. What’s next? If you're lucky you might find out this week…"

The streamer then followed up with: "And that's just the start. All this week we'll be bringing you the latest news on a whole load of your favourite @NetflixUK titles. Keep checking back – you won’t want to miss it!"

In a short video, the cast of Heartstopper said hello to fans and told them they "had a surprise" waiting "this week".

Fans instantly suggested it could be the new season finally getting an air date or a trailer, one said: "Announcement is coming" while another added: "I feel it, the trailer 1st around the corner."

Some pointed out that April 27 is the birthday of main character Charlie Spring, played by Joe Locke, meaning an announcement on Thursday would be fitting.

Replying to its own announcement about the Matilda musical arriving on Netflix yesterday, the streamer cryptically tweeted: "Tomorrow" with the Heartstopper leaves - sending fans into a frenzy.

A fan asked: "Is the trailer coming out or is the season coming out? I need to know ahhh!!" while another said: "I'm ready (definitely not ready but I'm loving it)"

A third joked: "Not to be dramatic but season 2 of heartstopper is going to heal my depression."

"Retweet if you're a heartstopper fan and you're literally standing in front your phone and doing nothing else besides waiting for whatever Netflix is gonna drop today," added someone else.

Heartstopper follows Charlie and Nick Nelson, portrayed by Kit Connor, as they develop a friendship then navigate that they may actually have feelings for each other.

The British comedy drama quickly won over fans, who have shared their love for the LGBQT+ story online. One said: "It's officially been a full year since Heartstopper was first released on Netflix & positively impacted so many of us. Endlessly grateful for this show."

Another shared: "One year ago I decided to watch a little gay show because one of my fav Tiktokers happened to be in it and now I've found some really amazing supportive friends and I got the confidence to come out as bisexual this year. Thank you heartstopper, happy birthday to this amazing show."

New pictures from the show were released, which fans loved but a trailer or season two release date is yet to arrive.
