Hearts star Barry McKay has unfinished Scottish Cup business as he targets glory vs Rangers

Barrie McKay admits he has unfinished business in the Scottish Cup after losing out with Rangers back in 2016.

The Hearts star was part of the Light Blues side that went down 3-2 to Hibs at the national stadium after a late winner from David Gray.

McKay will come up against his former employers this weekend as he aims to go one better than six years ago and leave with a winners medal around his neck.

The 27-year-old has been in stunning form for Robbie Neilson's men this season, helping them finish third in the Premiership table and secure European group stage football next season.

He hopes they can top off a great campaign by taking the famous old trophy back to Tynecastle come 5pm Saturday evening.

Asked if he has unfinished business, he said: “Yes. Every player wants to win trophies and I am no different."

Looking back on the win over Celtic in April 2016 with Rangers and then the run up the final, he added: "It is easier this time because we have had games right up until the cup final.

"The last time I think we had a three week break and that would have hampered us a little bit. We are all looking forward to it and hopefully we can win it.

"Obviously the goal and the magnitude of the game and then we went on and won. It was the first one for a while so it was a big day for the club and for the supporters.

“We were on such a high after beating Celtic and then you go to such a low after losing the final. You can win as many games as you want but you do want to be lifting a Cup at the end of it.

"It (the goal) is at the back of my mind now. It was years and years ago. If another one came about I would be buzzing but I don’t really think about that now.

"If you don’t win it, it is like the 2016 game so it all depends on the result."

McKay knows just how big a game it is for the players and everyone associated with the club.

Squads from over the years have earned legendary status and he is well aware of the possibility of joining them as part of the history of the club.

He continued: "It is a massive game for the players and for the club and hopefully we can be successful.

“When I signed I knew the magnitude of the club. It was about coming in, playing games and helping the team. It is a massive game and we are all looking forward to it.

“You go into every game and want to win. We will go with a game plan and try to win it.

“We have enough experienced players in the team who have played in big occasions. A few of the newer boys have played in the semi-finals and that will help them get ready for the final.

"We have had a good season but we want to go one step further and win the Scottish Cup.”
