Hearts planning double transfer swoop this summer as Robbie Neilson targets John Souttar replacement

Two central defenders are Hearts ' summer transfer priority.

John Souttar is Rangers-bound after agreeing a pre-contract with the Ibrox club while Taylor Moore is due back at Bristol City when his loan deal ends.

Robbie Neilson brought Toby Sibbick back to Tynecastle on a permanent basis in January to add depth to his backline for the rest of the season, but the Edinburgh Evening News reports that he and sporting director Joe Savage will try and land another two centre backs this summer.

Former Dundee United defender Joe Wright remains an option. He had had agreed terms over a Tynecastle switch last summer, but the deal was scrapped after he suffered serious knee and ankle injuries in his last appearance for Doncaster Rovers.

That lead to Hearts switching their attention to Moore, who signed on for the 2021/22 campaign.

The 26-year-old is attempting to return to fitness before making his next move after his contract at Doncaster expired last summer.

Souttar’s availability for this weekend’s Scottish Cup quarter-final clash with St Mirren and beyond is in doubt after he hobbled out of the weekend’s 2-2 draw with United at Tannadice.

He left the ground wearing a protective boot as the Jambos wait to assess the damage.

He was one of just six visiting players to suffer an injury on Tayside as the men in maroon resembled the “walking wounded” after the full-time, said Neilson.

Nathaniel Atkinson was withdrawn at half-time after Heras had already lost Gary Mackay-Steven, his replacement Alex Cochrane and Cammy Devlin.

Josh Ginnelly requited treatment immediately after the final whistle after Craig Halkett had headed in a late equaliser.
