Hearts midfielder on Robbie Neilson conversation as he targets Premiership breakthrough next season

Hearts kid Scott McGill hopes he can cap off his loan spell at Airdrie with a title and force his way into Robbie Neilson’s Premiership plans for next season.

The 20-year-old penned a one-year contract extension at Tynecastle earlier this month after impressing in League One with the Diamonds.

And his fine form continued as he climbed off the bench late on to score the final goal in a thumping 4-1 win over Falkirk that kept Airdrie’s title hopes alive.

Now the midfielder, who has netted five goals in 34 appearances, has revealed Jambos boss Neilson wants him to return to Gorgie ready for the step up to the top flight.

McGill said: “He (Neilson) wants me to go back to Hearts and go into pre-season flying, and try and push into the first team there.

“The Premiership would be a big test but that’s why I’m here, to get first team experience and get as many games as I can.

“This is my first season in men’s football and I’m learning every time I get on the pitch so it’s been great so far.

“All the guys have been a great help to me, especially Callum Fordyce and Rhys McCabe. They keep me right so it’s been great playing alongside them.

“I’m aiming to have a good finish to the season here and help Airdrie get a promotion.

“But if we keep doing what we are doing I believe we can go and win it.”

Airdrie broke the deadlock after just seven minutes when Callum Smith weaved his way past a few Falkirk defenders on the edge of the box and rifled the ball into the bottom corner.

Smith scored his and Airdrie's second in 61 minutes when he coolly slotted home from Easton's through ball and Calum Gallagher headed home at the near post after 75 minutes to put them in control.

A Leigh Griffiths header seconds later gave the Bairns a glimmer of hope, but McGill sealed it for Airdrie in 83 minutes, showing some trickery before firing a low drive into the bottom corner.

Airdrie remain five points adrift of leaders Cove Rangers with seven games to go and McGill added: "What a performance, the boys were excellent from start to finish and hopefully it continues.

“We were dominating the game and to come in and add to the score was brilliant.

“There were a few shimmies, then I just hoped for the best and luckily it went in.

“As soon as I came on I wanted to make an impact for the team."
