Tributes have been paid to Hearts legend Drew Busby after his death this morning at the age of 74.
The popular player was remembered for his commitment to the club as the team reminisced about Busby's legendary playing skills and knack for scoring goals. During his 18-year career Busby also played for Third Lanark, Airdrieonians, Toronto Blizzard and Morton.
He was later player-manager at Queen of the South before his retirement in 1984. Busby's son confirmed that he had died on Friday July 1 at home surrounded by his loving family.
In a touching tribute, Alan Busby wrote: "Our family are saddened to say that our amazing Dad/Husband and Papa, Drew Busby passed away this morning surrounded by his family. We are very much in mourning but appreciate all the many kind words being sent to us.
"A legend to some, a hero to others, we are so proud of him."
He also shared a poignant photo of Busby's grandchildren wearing two Hearts tops with Busby 9 on the back. It was captioned: "His grandchildren keeping it in the family."
Fans inundated Alan's post with their condolences as they paid tribute to Busby. The son of former Hearts player Willie Gibson, who played alongside Busby, described him as an "absolute gentleman".
Graham Gibson said: "So sorry to hear Alan. He & my dad scoring hat tricks at Arbroath is one of my favourite stories.
"I was lucky to spend time with him at a Willie Bauld dinner and he was an absolute gentleman to me, even trying to drag me into the official photo! It was brilliant to get to meet him."
Foundation of Hearts also paid tribute to the footballing legend who was very popular with Jambos fans. They said: "Such sad news about the great Drew Busby.
"A giant for Hearts in the 1970s and a massive favourite with fans then and ever since. Our condolences to his family and his many friends."
Hearts of Midlothian released a club statement paying tribute to Busby as they shared a profile written by club historian David Speed.
Part of their statement read: "Heart of Midlothian Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the legendary Drew Busby. A firm fans’ favourite, Drew was inducted into the Hearts Hall of Fame in 2018.
"Before recent renovations, a giant poster of Drew Busby sat on a floodlight pylon after supporters voted him one of their fourteen favourite players. On behalf of everyone at the club, we offer our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of the late, great Drew Busby."
