Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon in baby wait as Scotland to 'monitor' veteran's family situation

Scotland head coach Steve Clarke is monitoring Hearts goalkeeper Craig Gordon ahead of tonight's match with the Republic of Ireland as he waits to become a dad.

Tynecastle's number one was at the side of partner Summer before Wednesday’s triumphant 3-0 win over Ukraine as they await the birth of their second son. Gordon didn't have much to do in the match as John McGinn put the wheels in motion for Clarke's men before Lyndon Dykes' headed double sealed a great win.

Liam Kelly and Robby McCrorie are the other goalkeepers available to Scotland in this international break and Clarke insists that health has to come first when it comes to his 39-year-old Hearts stopper's situation.

He said: “Craig’s situation is something we have to monitor and we’ll be monitoring it, absolutely. It’s possible we’ll have the same sort of Saturday as we had a Wednesday, but the most important part of that is that mum and baby do well.”

Two draws in the remaining Nations League Group B section matches against Ireland and Ukraine will seal a promotion to Group A for Scotland.

Clarke added: “Two draws in the last two games will do us, but emotionally it’s better for everybody if we can go to play Ukraine with a win and we’ll be setting up to win the game. We want to win at Hampden. When we play there at home, we want teams to know they’re coming for a tough game."
