"He made a lasting impression on us all, and will be sorely missed by everyone.
"We hope everyone takes time to process this shocking news and can heal. We send our condolences to his close friends and family, who feel this loss immeasurably more."
Fellow university staff also shared their own tributes online, with Stefan Söldner-Rembold, professor of Particle Physics and the head of department, writing: "We are saddened to have lost Lloyd Cawthorne, an outstanding lecturer and inspirational teacher. His students created an impromptu memorial last Friday. Our thoughts are with his friends and family."
Other students took to Twitter to pay tribute publicly, with one writing: "Lloyd was an incredible lecturer and person. He taught me my first course on coding and my first course on nuclear and particle physics, without which I would not be where I am. He was brilliant. I send my deepest sympathy to his family and friends."
As another shared: "Heart-breaking news. Lloyd was a wonderful teacher. He showed so much enthusiasm in his care and support for the student and staff community. He was truly loved by all. I am honored to have been his student and will always cherish my memories at Manchester. RIP Lloyd."
