Heartbroken son launches fundraising appeal following fatal Lanarkshire fire

An online fundraising page has been set up to help the Cumbernauld family devastated by a tragic house fire on Friday morning.

We told you on Friday how a woman aged 79 died and her husband and son, aged 82 and 50, were seriously injured in the fire at a property on Glen Fyne Road.

Now the fundraising appeal, set up by son Jason Smith, has already raised hundreds of pounds in just a few hours as friends and community members rally round to show their support.

Jason posted on Go Fund Me: “In the early hours of July 1, my parents’ home went on fire. Tragically and sadly, my mum passed away in the fire.

“My father and brother managed to get out; my brother is fighting for his life in hospital. We have lost everything.

“I never thought in my life I would be writing a post like this to ask for help. Any help or donation would be greatly appreciated to help my dad and brother.”

Craigmarloch community council shared the online fundraiser, saying: “Our whole community has been shocked and saddened by the loss of one of our neighbours, and our thoughts are with George, his sons and their whole family.”

The group said in a Facebook post: “Jason’s mum, dad and brother’s house was lost in the fire in Glen Fyne Road.

"His mum tragically passed away in the fire and his brother is still seriously injured in hospital.

“We’re sharing a Go Fund Me page that has been set up by the family to help with funeral expenses and to help George get back on his feet.”

Neighbours and friends from around the local community shared their condolences with the family following the “heartbreaking” tragedy and sent messages of support to the two injured men.

Jason replied online: “I would like to thank everyone for their kind words about my mum and family.

"My mum was was a great woman.”
