Heartbroken neighbour's tribute to 'bubbly, kind' friend who was killed in Wortley home

A Leeds woman is ‘devastated and heartbroken’ after her ‘bubbly, kind’ friend and neighbour was killed last night.

Mother-of-two Jenny, 35, who died of serious injuries following an attack last night, has been described as “bubbly, so kind and gentle”. A 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of her murder and remains in police custody.

West Yorkshire Police rushed to Jenny’s terraced home in Bangor Grove, Lower Wortley, Leeds, at about 11.59pm last night (June 6). Jenny, whose last name has not been disclosed, was rushed to Leeds General Infirmary for treatment but sadly died.

Friend and neighbour Kirsty McAlpine, 28, heard “banging and shouting” coming from Jenny’s house and later watched from her window as Jenny was taken out on a stretcher to an ambulance. Kirsty burst into tears, fearing the worst for her friend.

Kirsty’s worst fears were confirmed in the morning, when she found out Jenny had died on social media. Kirsty, mother of one, has spoken of how she’ll miss Jenny, who was a mother of two, a baby boy and a slightly older boy.

Kirsty said: “I feel terrible, she was my friend. It’s devastating knowing that somebody can do that. I saw her get taken out of the house and into the ambulance. I just knew then that it wasn’t good.

“My partner heard banging and him [the man arrested] shouting but other than that, it was just all the lights and I as was looking out the window, I could just see everyone rushing around. We just knew it was serious. It’s shocking.

“I was screaming, screaming ‘Please, it can’t be Jenny!’ But unfortunately, it was. When I found out, I just burst into tears.”

Kirsty has lived in Bangor Grove for five years. She’s spoken of how welcoming Jenny, who'd lived there for about 13 years, was when she first moved in and how she’ll never forget her.

Kirsty said: “It’s devastating, I’ll never see her again. Heartbreaking. She’s got a one-year-old baby, that’s never going to see his mum again, and she’s got an older son as well who we saw go in to the house yesterday. He was possibly there as well at the same time as well. This is horrible. That poor little boy.

“She was bubbly, so kind and gentle. She wouldn’t upset anybody, she just wanted to make everybody happy. When I first moved in, she was so welcoming and just so friendly.”

Other residents in the Bangor neighbourhood have spoken about hearing “screaming and banging” last night. One man said he was “gobsmacked” but not surprised when he heard the awful news.
