Heartbroken family pay tribute to teen found dead in Cotswolds river

The heartbroken family of a 17-year-old boy who sadly died after getting into trouble in the River Thames have paid tribute to their son.

Gloucestershire Constabulary confirmed the discovery of a body yesterday afternoon (May 1) in Lechlade-on-Thames, with the teenager reported missing the previous evening.

Jake Smith, from Swindon, had been with a group of friends on Sunday evening (April 30) when he entered the water and did not resurface. Some of those who were with him entered the water to try and find him, and emergency services attended.

In a short statement, they said: "We unfortunately lost Jake in a tragic accident. The support and messages we have received have been overwhelming, and shows the love that people had.

"Jake will be missed by all his family and friends.

"We would like to thank the emergency services, the community and especially The Riverside for their kindness and support.

"Although this was a tragic accident, we urge people to stop and think before they jump into the river."

A huge search mission took place to recover the body. He was was eventually recovered from the water by police divers the following day (Monday).

At this time his death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.
