Heartbroken dog desperately needs new home after owner's tragic death

The RSPCA is desperately searching for a home for a "lovely dog " who ended up in kennels after his owner died.

Teddy, aged 10, was moved into the RSPCA's Coventry and District Branch after finding himself homeless - and has since been placed on their "extra special animals" list.

Animals can be put on the "extra special" list if they have complex needs, require ongoing medical care or have recently suffered a tragedy.

Due to Teddy's age, the RSPCA is concerned he will be overlooked by potential owners and will end up spending the rest of his life in kennels.

An RSPCA statement reads: "Teddy is a lovely chap who loves being around humans.

Teddy has been living at the RSPCA's Coventry and District Branch (RSPCA)

"Although Teddy is an older chap, he still loves his exercise and playing with toys."

The lurcher has been described as "young at heart" and would love to learn agility or fly ball with his new owner.

"Teddy has undergone some training while in our care as he can be reactive towards other dogs, which will need to continued in his new home," the statement adds.

"Due to this he will need to be the only pet in the household.

Despite his years, Teddy is 'young at heart' (RSPCA)

"He can be left for short periods and can live with children over the age of eight-years-old.

"He will also need access to his own private and secure garden with 6 foot plus fencing."

According to their latest statistics, the RSPCA took in 10,564 dogs in 2019, and carried out 218,939 microchippings, neuterings and treatments.

They have 14 regional animal centres across England and Wales working to help people adopt pets and rehome animals. They also have 42 animal centres run by branches.

An RSPCA statement reads: "Our mission is to ensure animals have a good life by rescuing and caring for those in need, by advocating on behalf of all animals and by inspiring everyone to treat them with compassion and respect.

"Our strategy to 2030 will build on this strong platform as we look towards our 200th anniversary in 2024 and the years that follow."

If you're interested in rehoming Teddy, or any other animals in the RSPCA's care, contact their Coventry and District Branch on 02476 336616 or email kennels@rspca-coventryanddistrict.org.uk.
