Heartbreaking tributes paid to young man 'taken too soon' after Galway crash as fundraiser launched

Tributes are pouring in for a young Irish man who was killed in a tragic car crash in Galway.

James O’Mahony, who was in his early 20s, was a passenger in a car heading to Galway city on Sunday, February 5.

A GoFundMe page has been set up in a bid to raise funds to help James’ family.

It is understood the driver lost control of the vehicle just after midday, and crashed into a tree on the N63, in the Ballinasloe area, Galway Beo reports.

James, who is from Cork, was pronounced dead at the scene while the driver of the car was taken to Portiuncula University Hospital for treatment and is said to be recovering.

The GoFundMe says: “Hi everyone. This fundraiser is for James who has unexpectedly passed away from a devastating accident. The family are looking for help in any way possible, anything you can give is much appreciated.”

In his death notice, James was described as a “beloved son”, who will be “deeply missed”.

Tributes have poured in for James, as he is fondly remembered in the community as a “beautiful person” gone too soon.

James will repose at Fordes Funeral Home, South Gate Bridge on Thursday February 9th from 5.00pm until 6.00pm.

Requiem Mass on Friday February 10th at 11.00am in Church of the Way of the Cross, Togher in Cork.

James will be laid to rest afterwards to St. Michael’s Cemetery, Blackrock.

One friend said: "Can't believe you're gone, what a cruel world... Look over your family and most of all your girlfriend. Rest in Paradise buddy, you'll never be forgotten.

Another said: "Can't believe it, I'm at a loss for words, RIP gone way too early. Sorry to your girlfriend to whom I know you loved and your heartbroken family. Gone but won't be forgotten."

Another added: "James, too young to die, boy. Beautiful person, Christ, RIP boy."

Local Councillor Michael Connolly also paid tribute to the victim saying: “It's just one of those tragedies on a Bank Holiday Weekend. He was someone's son, somebody loved him and although the young men weren't from the area, we just don't ever know if we'll make it safe back to our family.

“I suppose it's a warning to us all to drive with vigilance and care on the road and just be careful. I don't know what the circumstances of the accident were but I believe the two young men were attending a party the night before in north Galway and the deceased was getting a lift from the driver to Galway. I spoke to a Garda this morning and they are continuing with their enquiries.”
