'Heartbreak' after gay adult store is attacked and has windows smashed in

There is ‘heartbreak’ in the Village after a gay adult store was attacked a few days ago — but the victims have hit back saying the ‘community cannot be broken’.

Clonezone, on Sackville Street in the heart of Manchester’s LGBTQ+ district, was damaged on Wednesday night (March 22). Now, councillors have promised to take the matter up with cops.

Images taken today (Saturday, March 25) by MEN photographers show the store is boarded up, with temporary signage in place of windows. It remains open as usual.

Despite the vandalism, Clonezone has issued a statement defying the damage. It said: “Our Manchester store has always been special. There's something so unique and alive about the queer area in Manchester, and I love visiting from London.

“Windows can be broken but the LGBTQIA+ community cannot. We are stronger together, which is more important than ever now, with attacks on LGBTIA+ rights worldwide.

“A massive thankyou for the well wishes and comments after Wednesday, the team is fine and we're open as normal. [In] January 2024, we celebrate 40 years of being loud, proud, and unapologetically queer on Manchester's queer scene and have no intention of being anything other than that.”

There were further calls for unity from Manchester Pride. The charity said: “We are heartbroken to hear that Clonezone has experienced damage to their property on Wednesday night. Clonezone are a vital part of the queer community in Manchester and long-time partners with Manchester Pride.

“We must stand in solidarity and protect our local Gay Village businesses and everyone in our communities from attacks like this in the future. Stay safe, and look out for each other. Please make use of LGBT Foundation’s helpline (0345 3 30 30 30) if you need it, or for support visit https://www.manchesterpride.com/support-for-lgbtq-communities”

Following the attack, Pat Karney, the council’s city centre spokesperson, tweeted: “Disturbing to hear reports of smashed windows at Clonezone. Will check with GMP about this.”

Greater Manchester Police have been contacted for comment.
