The New York Giants are releasing quarterback Daniel Jones, putting a starting-caliber quarterback on the open market after he presumably clears waivers. Being due more than $13.8 million in salary still, it would be shocking if a team were to claim him.
Once he clears and the Giants are on the hook for his remaining salary this season, he will be free to sign with any team.
At that point, he will have to decide whether to sign with a team where he could play the rest of the season or whether to be a backup on a contending team, giving him the opportunity to be on a winning team.
The Cardinals could be that team.
They are 6-4 and sit atop the the NFC West. While quarterback Kyler Murray is playing at a high level, we have seen what happens if he is unable to play and second-year pro Clayton Tune is his backup. Jones is a much better option than Tune.
Jones has big-time game experience. He has played a high levels, certainly better than we have ever seen Tune play.
It would give Jones the opportunity to be part of a team with a great culture and that is playing well.
And after the season, he could still be a free agent and land in a spot to start.
It would be an inexpensive, talented insurance policy for the Cardinals as they make a push for the postseason.
