Health warning as bloodshot eyes can be little-known sign of 'silent killer'

Experts urge people to remain aware of as many potential warning signs of life threatening conditions as possible.

That includes the lesser-known sign, as spotting a rare or unusual symptom and flagging it to your GP could lead to early detection. An example of this may be bloodshot eyes, which can be a sign of high blood pressure, or hypertension.

The condition puts added stress on your blood vessels and vital organs, forcing your heart to work harder and increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes, writes the Mirror.

Some of the other warning signs to look out for that aren't as well-known have been shared by the British Heart Foundation charity group.

It is estimated that 18 per cent of adult men and 13 per cent of adult women have high blood pressure but are not getting treatment for it, warns Scotland's NHS Inform.

Contrary to popular assumption, it can develop at any age and might not cause any symptoms to begin with.

According to online chemists Pharmacy2U: "millions of people in the UK" are unaware they have high blood pressure, and the only way to be sure you're within a healthy range is by checking it.

"Even though you may not exhibit any symptoms or become noticeably ill, high blood pressure is still a serious condition.

"When your blood pressure is too high, it will strain your heart, blood vessels, and other organs," they added.

If you are experiencing any symptoms, it is important to act quickly and speak to your GP who will issue professional guidance.
