Health experts warn of another Covid wave as hospitals under pressure

Ireland is in the grip of another wave of Covid-19 with increasing pressure on hospitals, experts have warned.

The Government has made a fresh appeal on vaccine uptake while a new mask mandate is also being considered. The HSE also warned of increased pressures on hospital services as almost 600 staff members in acute hospital settings have tested positive in the last week.

Yesterday, there were 776 patients in hospital with the virus. This is 25 more than on Tuesday and an increase of 124 in a week.

HSE’s Chief Clinical Officer Dr Colm Henry said cases are being driven by Omicron sub-variants. He told RTE’s News at One: “These new variants mean people who were previously infected with Delta, such as in summer, autumn of last year, don’t enjoy that protection from reinfection.

“Even though we are in a much better position compared to previous summers, it highlights how much uncertainty still remains.

“Covid is not seasonal but is a virus for all seasons.”

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe urged people who have not yet received a booster to do so.

He said: “In particular, for those who are in their late 60s, for those who are immuno-compromised our message is please avail of the booster campaign because that is the greatest line of defence.”

Mr Donohoe also told RTE’s Morning Ireland legislation will be considered around when a mask mandate might be needed.

Meanwhile, University Hospital Kerry has imposed visitor restrictions due to the high numbers of Covid-19.

From yesterday, it ordered one visit a week to general wards, unless it is on compassionate grounds and this must be prearranged.

Visits to palliative care must also be by appointment.
