Headaches and nausea amongst signs of more serious illness

Nausea and changes in vision are red flag signs of a more serious illness.

As March marks Brain Tumour Awareness Month, the Brain Tumour charity is urging people to know the red flag signs. According to the charity, more than 12,000 people are diagnosed with a primary brain tumour each year.

The ECHO has previously reported on children and adults who were displaying worrying symptoms and were eventually given a diagnosis of a brain tumour. Lloyd Cheung, three, began vomiting, walking into things and having silent seizures, but was told by doctors it was viral.

Mum Sarah returned to the doctors when his condition was worsening and he was soon given a diagnosis of a rare and aggressive tumour. Despite a gruelling course of treatment and initial news he was in remission, Lloyd died in his mum's arms at the age of three.

Aaron Wharton was four when he began to display a "lopsided smile" and was being randomly sick. Given a diagnosis of cerebral palsy, Nicola pushed for further treatment when a large tumour was found.

Now aged seven, he was spent the last few years putting up a brave fight. Mum Nicola is urging others to know the signs and to "push" for answers.

Around 500 children and young people in the UK are diagnosed with a brain tumour each year. While they are rare, it is important to know the common symptoms, which include:

  • Headaches
  • Changes in vision
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Balance problems
  • Seizures
  • Behavioural changes
  • Abnormal head position
  • Delayed puberty
  • Abnormal growth
  • Excessive thirst
  • Reduced consciousness

Brain tumour symptoms in adults can also include headaches, changes to vision and nausea, but, some of these symptoms can be caused by everyday things too. Common signs include:

  • Headaches
  • Changes in vision
  • Seizures
  • Nausea and dizziness
  • Tiredness
  • Loss of taste and smell

The charity has also launched a campaign for "faster diagnosis" to ensure treatment is given at the earliest opportunity. More information can be found here.
