Headache becomes most reported symptom of Covid as cases surge in UK

Research has revealed that a headache has become the most common symptom in people who have contracted Covid-19.

The news comes as cases of the virus continue to rise across the UK, with the increase driven by Omicron sub-variants BA.4 and BA.5. Symptoms of the new sub-variants include a cough, runny nose, sore throat, fatigue and muscle pain.

News of the most reported symptom has been issued by the ZOE Covid Study app, which collects information on symptoms which is then analysed by researchers at King’s College London. More than two in three people with Covid who used the app reported a headache as one of their symptoms, The Mirror reports.

The symptom was reported by patients before they tested positive for the virus, with some suffering from a headache before experiencing breathing difficulties. The news comes as one of the UK’s most senior health officials urged people to wear masks in crowded and enclosed spaces, amid fears that Covid-related hospital admissions could hit an 18-month high.

Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows that 3.35% of the population in England are testing positive for Covid, compared to 1.57% in 2021. Parts of County Durham Sunderland, North Tyneside, Newcastle, Gateshead and Northumberland all recorded a rise in cases over a seven-day period ending 26 June.
