“The world is duller without him already,” she said under the Instagram post.

“I’m lucky I got to sing, record, perform, laugh, joke around, talk sense, talk nonsense and connect with such a wonderful, hugely gifted, charismatic, big hearted, supportive, high spirited and lovely man.”

May described Meat Loaf as a “wildly talented and vividly vibrant” person.

She added: “He was everything you’d hope he’d be.”

The pair met a number of years ago in New York and stayed in touch. They went on to work together on an orchestral version of his hit 'I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That).

“I’m very grateful I got a chance to say goodbye, thank him, joke with him and tell him I loved him just before he passed.

“I heard his big voice one last time.”

She also shared her condolences to Deborah, his daughters, Amanda and Pearl, and his “right hand man” and guitarist Paul Crook.

May finished the post with, “I’ll really miss you pal.”
