'He was aggressive' - Anthony Gordon sent stern Newcastle warning after Everton transfer

Anthony Gordon has been warned by Eddie Howe he will 'have to earn' the support of Newcastle United fans following his move from Everton.

The Blues confirmed on Sunday afternoon that Gordon had completed his move to the North East. Everton could receive up to £45m for the 21-year-old.

The winger has struggled for form so far this season, but Howe is convinced the England under-21 international is capable of playing across the front line and can play a part in their attempt to qualify for the Champions League.

He said: “Anthony has the passion that our fans will feed off but he will have to earn that support."

Before he added: “He’s a young player with huge potential to have a big impact on our season. He’s very quick, very dynamic and he’s versatile. He can give us something different.

“But the best is yet to come from him; we’re going to have to support and guide Anthony through his move. Certainly I was very impressed by the person I met yesterday. He handled himself really well.”

In October, Gordon became embroiled in feisty clashes with Kieran Trippier and Fabian Schar as Everton lost 1-0 at St James’ Park, and Howe has no doubt Newcastle fans will grow to love the forward’s 'spirit'.

"It's interesting looking back at that footage," the Newcastle boss said. "You don't think anything of it at the time.

“He's an opposing player and, of course, you're battling people for points so it's a totally different thing when a player is on the opposing team and now he is one of us.

"The players will embrace that spirit that he has, that passion that he has. I like the fact that he didn't stand down that day. He was aggressive in standing his position.

“The supporters will love that about him. Our own players will love that about him. He brings something different to us. I'm sure it will take time for him to feel part of the group. Naturally, that always happens, but the players will grow to love him."
