"He's very remorseful" - Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe explains Joelinton selection

Eddie Howe has explained his team selection after naming Joelinton in his starting line-up and says that "internal discussions" had taken place in the build-up to the clash against Fulham.

Joelinton kept his place after a week in which he was pulled over for a drink driving charge in the early hours of Thursday morning. Howe made a late decision on the £40million man but stuck with the influential first-team star.

Speaking before the game to Sky Sports: "We don’t underestimate the severity of what he did. We’ve dealt with him internally and had discussions with him and the group.

"He’s very remorseful, very sad. We’ve put him into the team based on everything we know."

Newcastle went into the game with Howe able to name an unchanged team as the Magpies aimed to maintain their unbeaten run in the Premier League at home. United can leapfrog Manchester United back into third place on goal difference with a win over the Cottagers.

Fulham arrived on Tyneside on the back of a good run of form having won every game since the World Cup break.
