'He’s just a normal grandpa': Trump’s eldest granddaughter Kai speaks at Republican National Convention

Donald Trump's eldest granddaughter offered a rare glimpse into the private life of the former US President, describing him as "just a normal grandpa" who "gives us candy and soda when our parents aren't looking".

Kai Trump, 17, addressed the Republican National Convention (RNC) on Wednesday evening, aiming to "share the side of my grandpa that people don't often see".

She said: "Even when he's going through all these court cases, he always asks me how I'm doing. He always encourages me to push myself to be the most successful person I can be. Obviously, he sets the bar pretty high, but who knows, maybe one day I'll catch him."

“When I made the high honour roll, he printed it out to show his friends how proud he was of me,” she said.

“He calls me during the middle of the school day to ask how my golf game is going and tells me all about his.”

Mr Trump appeared visibly pleased throughout his granddaughter's speech, which adds to a growing list of testimonials aiming to present a more personal side of the former president.

This marked a significant debut for the next generation of Trumps.

Her father, Donald Trump Jr, introduced her by saying it was her "first time ever on a stage" and "first time ever giving a speech".

Kai, the eldest daughter of Donald Trump Jr and his ex-wife Vanessa Trump, recently turned 17 and will not be eligible to vote in this year's election.

An avid golfer, she recently shared a photograph on Instagram of herself with her grandfather after winning a tournament at the Trump International Palm Beach golf course.

Following the recent assassination attempt on Trump, Kai posted a supportive message on social media.

Alongside an image of a bloodied Trump raising his fist moments after the shooting, she wrote: "We love you Grandpa. Never stop fighting!"
