'He's a big leader' - Fred on Manchester United partner Casemiro and how squad mentality has changed

Fred has credited Manchester United's summer signings with helping to change the mentality in the squad, after another comeback win propelled them into the FA Cup quarter-finals.

United were a goal down to West Ham with 13 minutes remaining at Old Trafford, but three late goals continued the bid for a remarkable quadruple, just four days after winning the Carabao Cup at Wembley.

That was the club's first trophy in six years, but the wait could for the next one could be a matter of months. An FA Cup quarter-final against Fulham awaits and Real Betis are the opponents in the Europa League last-16.

United have shown their steel on several occasions this season. They came from behind twice against Barcelona in the Europa League play-off round and scored twice in the final 12 minutes to beat Manchester City 2-1 in January.

The mentality of this squad has been praised this season and Fred has credited Erik ten Hag with bringing belief to the dressing room, as well as the summer signings, especially South Americans Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro and Antony, with engineering a change in mindset.

"We bring in players with good mentality, now the players that were here before change mentality as well," he said. "Erik ten Hag brings a lot of things with him, he brings energy into the dressing room. I don’t know what’s different, it’s the same players, but a different mentality.

"Every moment we believe, we believe in the game, we have the mentality, it’s important to keep this to win the trophies."

One of the key players in United's turnaround this season, on and off the pitch, is Fred's international teammate Casemiro. The 30-year-old wanted to join the club this summer even after the wreckage of the 4-0 defeat at Brentford in August and he's proven to be a transformative figure.

The holding midfielder won five Champions League titles with Real Madrid but celebrated his first trophy with United with gusto on Sunday. His rest against West Ham lasted 45 minutes before he was called off the bench.

"I love to play with Casemiro," said Fred. "He won a lot of trophies in Real Madrid, he has a good mentality in the national team as well, he’s important to be a part of our squad.

"He’s a big leader, he talks a lot with us, with every player, every day. He tries to work on his English as well. He is a good guy, everyone knows this, he has a good way in the dressing room."
