'He is ready', Eddie Howe talks Jamaal Lascelles' role ahead of season-defining cup double

Jamaal Lascelles is "ready" to play his part in Newcastle United's season-defining cup double this week.

That is the view of his head coach Eddie Howe who has been impressed with the skipper's attitude despite a lack of game-time this term. Since Newcastle were relegated in 2016, Lascelles has been a mainstay in the United starting line-up and has captained the team.

This season he has started one Premier League game and two League Cup ties. When asked about his captain's status going into a huge week, Howe said: "His professionalism strikes me every time I see Jamaal around the training ground. "On the training pitch he has been first class.

"He is waiting. "He is ready. He has worked incredibly hard and yeah I back him if - given an opportunity - to play very well."

Speaking about his own personal situation back on November 10, Lascelles said: "I have been on the bench for a while now and I can completely understand.

"Especially as a defender. You never change a back four if they are fit and keeping clean sheets. As much as I want to play I totally support that. "It won't change my work ethic I will always work hard and be ready when called upon. Last night I was proud to show that."
