'He has to' - Mason Mount told to snub Liverpool in blunt Chelsea transfer plea

William Gallas has urged Mason Mount to remain at Chelsea amid links with a move to Liverpool.

The England international is currently at loggerheads with the Londoners as he enters the final 12 months of his contract at Stamford Bridge. Conversations surrounding an extension with the 24-year-old have seemingly cooled as the academy graduate looks to earn similar numbers to Reece James - who penned a new deal last year.

Jurgen Klopp's side have been mooted with a move for the playmaker, who is set to be a free agent next summer, as it has been claimed they are looking to bring the midfielder to Anfield amid the uncertainty surrounding his future.

"I don’t understand what is going on with Mason," said Gallas speaking to Genting Casino. "It is very difficult for me to understand that situation. When Frank Lampard was there, followed by Thomas Tuchel, he had several great seasons.

"The contract speculation doesn't help him, but I don’t know if it is a problem. Even if you are renewing your contract, that should be the job of your agent and you have to stay focused with what you are doing on the pitch.

"The best way to get what you want with your contract is to perform, it is that simple. It is not to be angry and to let your performances drop, the best thing to do is to perform. You have to show the board that they are wrong because you deserve to be in the starting XI, you deserve to stay at Chelsea and you deserve to get what you are asking for..."

Mount has come under fire from fractions of the Chelsea fanbase following his performances and with the added struggles under new manager Graham Potter, criticism hasn't been far away from the Portsmouth-born midfielder or the south London club.

As it stands, the Reds sit eight points clear with their sights firmly set on breaking into the top four and qualifying for next season's Champions League. Saturday's win over Leeds for Chelsea ended their winless run but they still remain seven points off qualifying for Europe.

However, he doesn't believe a move to Anfield would be the right "fit" for Mount. He added:"...He has to come back to his level, he has to train hard because right now, when you’re not training properly, it is really difficult to perform at the weekend.

"At the same time, you have different midfielders who are training with you and they are better than you. You have to clear your head and then regain that winning attitude and show Chelsea that you deserve to stay there.

"He’s a Chelsea boy, he is from the academy. Of course, we may not know all the information, maybe he wants to leave. But if he wants to stay, don’t go down the route of getting upset.

"I don’t think he is a player who will fit in at Liverpool. Mason Mount is more like a playmaker; when Frank Lampard was the manager, he was almost like the playmaker.

"At Liverpool it is completely different, he won’t have the same impact like he had with Chelsea. He can still have that impact at Chelsea."
