A Las Vegas man died not because of the knife-wielding woman who broke into his home, but because of the police officers he called for help.

Brandon Durham, 43, called 911 just after 12:30 a.m. Nov. 12 to initially report that there were people shooting outside of his home, but later told the operator that someone had broken in, as reported by KABC.

When officers arrived, they discovered Durham and the suspect, later identified as Alejandra Boudreaux, fighting over a knife. Police fired multiple shots, hitting and killing Durham. Boudreaux was not injured by the gunfire, but was arrested and taken into custody, as reported by NSNV.

Durham and Boudreaux reportedly knew each other and had previously been in a relationship together. A criminal complaint obtained by NSNV alleged that Boudreaux broke into the home with a weapon with the intention of getting police to fire at them.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has opened an internal investigation into the actions of the officer, identified as 26-year-old Alexander Bookman. The results of the investigation will determine if criminal charges will be filed.

Isabella, Durham's 15-year-old daughter who was also home at the time of the incident, said at a press conference on Nov. 14, "I am disgusted in how the Metropolitan Police told my father after killing him to stay down, treating him like he was the suspect in this situation. I want justice for my father. This is disgusting both on the assailant and Officer Bookman."

A Gofundme has been created to help support Durham's family in the wake of his death.

Meanwhile, Boudreaux has been charged with home invasion while in possession of a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon constituting domestic violence, child abuse, neglect or endangerment and disregard for the safety of persons or property.
