A new Harry Potter television series is reportedly in the works at HBO. Warner Bros. is said to be in talks with writer J. K. Rowling about coming on board as a producer.
Each season of the potential TV series will focus on one book in the Harry Potter book series, which consists of seven novels. While Rowling is being eyed as a producer, she is not expected to be showrunner of the series, reports industry publication, Deadline.
Rumours of a Harry Potter television series first emerged a few years ago following the creation of HBO Max. At the time, Warner Bros appointed Kids, Young Adult and Classics president Tom Ascheim to manage the Wizarding World and Potter franchises, which includes theme parks, tours and the $9.1 billion-grossing theatrical library that spans the Harry Potter and spinoff Fantastic Beasts titles. The potential TV series would retell the story of Harry Potter, whose life changed forever after his parents were murdered by the evil Lord Voldemort. The story, which is based on Rowling’s novels, was previously a series of feature films that were released between 2001-2011.
The eight original films have collectively brought in a whopping $7.7 billion at the box office. They saw Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson in the lead roles of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger respectively.
