Betfair Chase Was Set Up As Part Of The Betfair Million Bonus Scheme

Being first run in only 2005, the Betfair Chase is one of the newer longer distance Grade One Chases on the calendar – and was first set up as part of the sponsors bonus scheme that offered £1m if the winner went onto land the King George VI Chase and Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Kauto Star won the bonus in the 2006-07 season when winning the Betfair Chase, King George and Gold Cup.

The bonus is no longer in place – but the Betfair Chase is and remains one of the season highlights during the first half of the jumps season.

Kingscliff Won The First Ever Running Of The Betfair Chase

Having won the first ever running of the Betfair Chase in 2005, then Kingscliff created a bit of history.

Trained by Robert Alner and ridden by Robert Walford, who is now a trainer too – the horse beat top Irish stayer Beef Or Salmon, with former Gold Cup winner Kicking King in third.

Kauto Star The Most Successful Betfair Chase Winner

The legendary Kauto Star won the Betfair Chase four times during his remarkable career. With these Haydock wins spread out from 2006 to 2011.

He was just 6 years-old when he won his first Betfair Chase and ended winning his last at the age of 11 (watch below).

Kauto Star also went onto win the Cheltenham Gold Cup twice and the King George VI Chase an incredible five times. While during his career he won 23 of his 41 races and amassed £2,375,883 in prize money.

Trainer Paul Nicholls Won The Betfair Chase SIX Times

Kauto Star was also trained by Paul Nicholls and his haul of four Betfair Chase win has helped the Ditcheat handler win this Haydock race six times in total.

His other King George VI Chase winner Silviniaco Conti was his other Betfair Chase winner – taking the prize in 2012 and 2014.

  • Kauto Star (2006, 2007, 2009, 2011)
  • Silvianaco Conti (2012, 2014)

Cue Card and Bristol De Mai Both Treble Betfair Chase Winners

The Betfair Chase is a race that has a habit of producing repeat winners – in addition to the already mentioned Kauto Star and Silvianaco Conti, the race has also seen Cue Card and Bristol De Mai win the race three times each.

Cue Card won the pot three times between 2013 and 2016, while the popular grey Bristol De Mai, who was a Haydock specialist during his career, won his trio of Betfair Chases between 2017 and 2020.

Bristol De Mai, who was trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies, ran at Haydock 10 times during his career. Winning six of them.

Who Won Last Year’s Betfair Chase at Haydock?

Sticking with the ‘repeat winners’ theme, it could pay to note that the 2023 Betfair Chase winner Royale Pagaille is also back for more in 2024.

Owned by Rich Ricci and trained by Venetia Williams, this horse is another that has fallen in love with the Haydock track. He’s run here five times and won four of them, with his only defeat a second in this race in 2021.

Royale Pagaille will be looking to become the fifth repeat winner of the Betfair Chase since it was first run in 2005.

He’s the general second favourite win the Betfair Chase market with the best horse racing betting sites in the UK. Behind the Dan Skelton runner Grey Dawning.
