San Diego, CA- The question looms: will Braxton Burmeister start as quarterback against Hawai’i on Saturday night? Burmeister is under concussion protocol, but he practiced on Monday and Tuesday. Right now he is probable to play on Saturday per SDSU trainers and doctors.
After losing 35-13 to the Boise State Broncos following a total second half offensive collapse at Albertsons Stadium last week, the Aztecs will be looking to register victory back home at Snapdragon Stadium against the struggling Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors.
The Aztecs made the difficult decision to part ways with Offensive Coordinator Jeff Hecklinski last week after the program’s worst start in several decades. Despite offensive failure, the Aztecs defense and special teams can score, and in this matchup, that matters.
San Diego State is a 21.5-point favorite for Saturday night’s game, and the Aztecs very often follow a bad loss with a decisive victory.
WHY THE BOW’S WILL WIN
The Aztecs have by-and-large failed to produce anything resembling a skilled offensive team, and have since re-enrolled Jeff Horton as offensive coordinator after a major coaching shake-up.
Offensive woes coupled with seismic quarterback problems indicate that the Aztecs are going to be at a disposition for some time.
If the Rainbow Warriors can take advantage of the Aztecs’ disorganization and manage to score, they might have a chance to win this game.
WHY THE AZTECS WILL WIN
Despite the Aztecs’ offensive woes, the Rainbow Warriors have been giving up 40 points per game, and this will be a big opportunity for the Aztecs to run the ball for major yardage. The Bows have struggled to stop the run this season, so watch for Running Back University to be in full effect.
Jeff Horton might also place the Aztecs offense back on track in time to impact this game. He plans to return the program to the offensive basics by limiting their scope of plays, and he will be sticking with what traditionally works.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN
If the Aztecs don’t make immediate progress with Jeff Horton as OC, this game might be hard to watch as a mediocre battle between two of college football’s worst offensive teams.
The Aztecs will come off with the win against Hawai’i, bringing their record back to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in conference. The Rainbow Warriors will register their third straight road loss, unfortunately.
Fans will have to watch for indications that Jeff Horton is immediately turning things around. His experience has helped SDSU win in seasons past, and he can certainly help the Aztecs save this season as well.
