Have your say: Should the BBC air a drama on the life of Jimmy Savile?

The BBC is set to air a new drama based on the life of one of the UK's most prolific paedophiles, Jimmy Savile - but should they?

Starring Steve Coogan as Savile, the show will focus on the early years of Savile, before moving on to his BBC career and the closing years of his life. The show will also focus on the multiple sexual offences against children he committed, as well as how they were covered up.

Executive producer Jeff Pope said: "I think this is a story that has to be told. We must understand why a man like Jimmy Savile seemed to remain immune for so long to proper scrutiny and criminal investigation."

However, concerns have been raised over the BBC's decision to make the show. The BBC has sought to address some criticism, with the controller of BBC Drama commissioning Piers Wenger saying: "The story of Jimmy Savile is one of the most emotive and troubling of our times. We do not intend to sensationalise these crimes but to give voice to his victims.

"We will work with survivors to ensure their stories are told with sensitivity and respect and to examine the institutions which Jimmy Savile was associated with and the circumstances in which these crimes took place.

"Drama has the ability to tackle sensitive real life subjects and consider the impact of a crime on its survivors and what lessons can be learnt to stop this ever happening again."

The show has also been hit by delays, with reports emerging once again that it may be delayed as they don't want to "put a foot wrong".
