Have your say on the new Manchester tourist tax

This past week has seen the introduction of a tourist tax to Manchester, with the Capital of the North becoming the first city in the UK to adopt such a policy.

The new charge means that tourists will have to pay £1 per room for every night at accommodation in the city centre, with the policy already common across major European cities.

Dubbed the City Visitor Charge, it is aimed at raising funds to boost tourism via various events and campaigns, and we want to hear what your thoughts are on it.

Many readers have already responded to the news, with one person against the tax saying: "My youngest attended JRNCM and eldest Manchester University. I do really like it and it's environs. However tourist tax would make me personally think twice before visiting. I just wonder where next."

However, others defended the new policy, with one reader responding: "Have people forgot you always pay a tourist tax per night when visiting other countries? £1…not exactly breaking the bank is it."

Another added: "Surely people only stay a couple of nights for a city visit. its certainly not a 2 week holiday destination. So for a couple of £s and they do use it to clean the place up happy days."
