Has Meena left Emmerdale? Soap boss reveals alternate ending for character which nearly aired

Emmerdale bosses have revealed they considered letting murderous Meena get off scot-free with her crimes but decided against having a murderer roaming the village.

Meena's murder trial came to a close last week after a tense week in the court room as actress Paige Sandhu's time on the soap came to an end.

Viewers of the ITV soap were relieved as the narcissistic nurse finally met her demise, and although the guilty verdict came with a vicious attack, it seems we have seen the last of Meena Jutla as she is sent down for good.

However, Emmerdale producer, Kate Brooks, has revaled that Meena very nearly met a different fate.

She confessed that the thought of letting Meena get away with murder crossed their minds but one important factor held them back.

Kate said: "She has given us so much storyline recently that of course there is always that temptation to let her get away with it.

"Both Paige and Rebecca touched on it earlier, but a person who is capable of such heinous crimes and has no remorse can’t stay long in the village; they can’t continue on that path because there is nowhere else for her to go."

Noting other characters would be affected by the decision, she said viewers and the storyline needed to move forward: "We knew that we needed to draw a line under it, not just for the viewers but for our characters who are left, they need justice and need for Meena to be punished for her crimes.

"If they don’t get the closure then there is no way to move them on as characters, so we knew that we had to let Meena’s fate rest in the hands of the soap Gods and so I hope people will be very satisfied with what she gets."

Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7.30pm on ITV and the ITV Hub.
