It’s a thorny road for JJP’s Dushyant Chautala in the upcoming assembly polls. The Uchana Kalan MLA, who emerged as a kingmaker in 2019, has been campaigning across the state with alliance partner Azad Samaj Party’s leader Chandrashekhar Azad. But he is also facing the ire of Dalits and farmers in his constituency.
Newslaundry spoke to the locals in Uchana Kalan to understand about Dushyant’s influence and the issues eroding his hold in the Jat-dominated region.
Sandeep, a local of the constituency’s Chhattar village, said, “The youth are going to Azad’s rallies, but it does not seem that they will vote for the JJP and ASP alliance. That is because of the boycott of Dalits by the dominant community here in 2021. There is a feeling that Dushyant did not support us then.”
In the 11 assembly polls held so far, Birendra Singh of Jat leader Chhotu Ram’s family has won the seat five times as a Congress candidate. In 2014, he was elected as Hisar MP, while his wife Premlata Singh won the MLA seat as a BJP candidate in the same year.
In the upcoming elections, Birendra’s son, Brijendra Singh, is the Congress candidate. Meanwhile, the BJP has fielded former JJP leader Devendra Atri, who belongs to the Brahmin community.
