Actor Harvey Guillén recently expressed optimism about the possibility of a queer Disney princess in the near future. Known for his roles in 'What We Do In The Shadows' and 'Wish,' Guillén believes that we are moving towards a time where such representation could become a reality.
In an interview with ComicBook.com, Guillén acknowledged the progress Disney has made in LGBTQ character representation. He mentioned that while it can be challenging to introduce new directions in storytelling, especially given the existing narrative frameworks, Disney is making efforts to diversify its characters.
Guillén, who portrayed Gabo in Disney's 'Wish,' a character inspired by Grumpy from 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,' highlighted the incremental steps Disney has taken in recent projects. Films like 'Onward,' 'Eternals,' 'Lightyear,' 'Jungle Cruise,' 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,' 'Beauty and the Beast,' 'Finding Dory,' 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,' and 'Zootopia' have included subtle LGBTQ moments.
Moreover, Disney's animated feature 'Strange World' and the live-action series 'High School Musical: The Musical: The Series' have incorporated queer romance subplots involving supporting characters, indicating a gradual shift towards more inclusive storytelling.
Guillén emphasized that achieving meaningful representation takes time, noting the slow progress that the film industry has made in this regard. Despite the challenges, he remains hopeful about the future and the potential for a queer Disney princess to be introduced, which he believes would be a significant step forward in promoting diversity and inclusivity in media.
