Harvey Elliott's Liverpool transfer leaves Fulham fans dejected as big fish circles to full advantage

Liverpool confirmed the signing of Harvey Elliott from Fulham on Sunday.

The 16-year-old is an undoubted talent and the Reds fought off competition from Real Madrid, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain to secure his signature.

The England youth international became the Premier League's youngest ever player when handed his top-flight debut by the Cottagers last season.

Blood Red: Jurgen Klopp on the potential of new signing Harvey Elliott

Fulham would have liked to have kept the winger, but the lure of joining the European champions was too much for Elliott and he has already made his first-team Liverpool debut under Jurgen Klopp against Napoli at Murrayfield on Sunday.

It looks like Michael Edwards and co have pulled off another phenomenal signing but the transfer has left fans of the London side considering the potential cost.

Sam Anderson, who was chosen as one of the club's five most committed 'superfans', told the ECHO that he understood why Elliott left to join Liverpool but was sad to see it happen again.

He said: "I'm all too used to it to say I’m unhappy but is it sad our fantastic academy keeps producing players then big fish circle and take them? Yes.

"But it's the way of the game we are all feeder clubs so you just hope you can see them have a good career and think at least we were the start."

He also explained what the Fulham faithful thought of Elliott when he played for them last season.

"He was lively with good vision and obviously a big talent," the avid Fulham supporter said.

"Elliott is a forward-thinking midfielder and he’d link the midfield and forwards well playing with confidence not only running with the ball at his feet but also with his range of passing.

"It will depend really what happens with him at Liverpool as to how far he will go.

"If he constantly gets sent out on loan it will be tricky to see development going far enough to ever break into a side that are the champions of Europe.

"Whereas if he hangs around the first team sessions and gets exposed to the obvious quality at Liverpool it looks like he can easily develop well but if he is in and out of the club on loan I can see this story heading in the way of many young prospects at big clubs.

"It will be interesting to compare his career with that of Ryan Sessegnon.

"He stuck around and developed a bit more after making his debut so young and will soon leave with a wealth of experience still at a young age while Elliott has jumped immediately to a big club."

One topic of conversation that has been lively amongst Liverpool fans regarding Elliott was the style of his haircut which appears to show an undoubted confidence to pull anything off - and it's great to see.

However, it doesn't appear Fulham fans paid much attention to the do.

"As for his hair I haven’t had single conversation about it," Mr Anderson said.

"Does it show confidence? I mean yes but if I was the player with the youngest ever Premier League appearance I’d be pretty full of myself!"
