Harvey Elliott hands Liverpool injury scare against Lyon

Liverpool were handed an injury scare as Harvey Elliott was forced off in the first half of their mid-season friendly against Lyon.

The 19-year-old had enjoyed a lively first half and was involved in the opening goal for Fabio Carvalho after less than a minute.

However, he was replaced by Melkamu Frauendorf on the half-hour mark, and was seen shaking his head as he left the pitch.

Jurgen Klopp had confirmed before the game that he was planning to change up his team at half-time and on the hour-mark, suggesting that Elliott’s withdrawal was enforced.

The Reds have already seen Luis Diaz return to Merseyside during their time in Dubai, after the Colombian suffered discomfort as he looked to return from a knee injury. Meanwhile, Curtis Jones was missing from the matchday squad that faced Lyon having not been pictured in recent training sessions in the Middle East.

Liverpool currently only have three senior players confirmed to be out because of injury, in Diaz, Diogo Jota and Arthur Melo. But there was better news for Klopp elsewhere in midfield at least, as Naby Keita was fit to start on the bench against the Ligue 1 giants ahead of a potential playing return.

Regardless, Elliott’s withdrawal was an unwanted injury scare for the Reds with it yet to be seen if it was just precautionary or something more sinister.

Liverpool face AC Milan in their second and final Dubai Super Cup match on Friday, December 16, before returning to competitive action away at Man City in the League Cup on Thursday 22 December.
