Industrialist Harsh Goenka has been actively talking about food beyond the obvious parameters of taste and look. Recently in a tweet, he talked about the cost gap in the world of food and beverages.
Sharing a couple of images of women making idlis in a local market of Tamil Nadu he wrote, "There is an ‘Idli Market’ in Erode, Tamil Nadu where they sell 20000 idlis daily. Two idlis here cost Rs 3.50 and if you include sambar/chutney then it costs Rs 6.50. India is an interesting country where a cup of Starbucks coffee costs Rs 250 and two yummy idlis cost Rs3.50!"
He called India an interesting country and compared the price point of a plate of idli and a cup of Starbucks coffee. In no time, his tweet went viral and received 7034 likes and 963 retweets.
His tweet left netizens with divided opinions. While some agreed to his point, there were people who found the comparison 'unfair'.
One user called it an "unfair" comparison, and wrote, "India is an interesting country where a cup of Starbucks coffee costs ₹250 and two yummy idlis cost Rs3.50!".
Another user wrote, "That’s so true and the same Idli when you have abroad will cost you more than a Starbucks coffee. There is no proposition to demand/supply in this case and I feel it’s the brand value which sells...."
According to a user, the price difference is also because idli is a need, while Starbucks coffee if a want. She wrote, "Idli is NEED, Starbucks is WANT! Both are awesome"
Another user agreeing to Harsh's point wrote, "True Sir. I just remembered, in #Bangalore #ITPL, our office cafeteria tea/Coffee would cost 10-12 Rs and just outside campus on Road side portable shop, they were charging 2 Rs. This is real specialty of our India where everyone gets served what they can afford."
