Harry Winks confirms injury decision made amid Tottenham loan rumours

Harry Winks has confirmed that he has undergone surgery on an ankle injury that has plagued his time at Sampdoria. The Tottenham midfielder has spent the first half of the season on loan in Serie A but is yet to make an appearance for the club.

Winks was pushed further down the pecking order in the Tottenham midfield following the arrival of Rodrigo Bentancur in January, and the signing of Yves Bissouma in the summer from Brighton only worsened the situation for the England international.

Winks had options in the summer before deciding on a loan move to Serie A with Sampdoria, but he has struggled to make an impact after struggling with an ankle injury that has been a persistent problem.

There have been rumours recently that the Italian club could look to renegotiate the terms of his loan move after failing to make an appearance for the club due to his injury issue, and the latest news will come as a blow to the 26-year-old.

Winks revealed on his Instagram page that he has undergone surgery on the injury, and despite what it could mean for his time with Sampdoria he is focused on returning quickly to help his team.

"Absolutely gutted it’s come to this, I came here with the hope to give my all to this club," Winks said.

"However after trying everything to return to playing, a persistent problem I had since the summer has resulted in surgery.

"I'm positive the procedure went well and all my focus is on returning as soon as possible to help the team. Thanks for all the support."

Winks made just 17 starts in all competitions last season under Antonio Conte, and Sampdoria head-coach Dejan Stankovic has admitted that he had not yet seen the player in action ahead of his surgery.

The procedure could keep Winks out of action for a further three to four months, according to reports, which could mean a premature end to his time in Italy.
