Harry Styles fans lose it over 'subtle references to Olivia Wilde romance' in new song

Harry Styles released his highly-anticipated new single and its accompanying music video earlier this morning, to much excitement from his adoring fanbase.

The singer, 28, had teased the release of As It Was earlier this week, with fans eagerly awaiting to hear the track and see its accompanying music video.

It's the lead single from his upcoming album Harry's House - his third solo record to date - due to be released on May 20.

The lyrics of the synth-pop track - understood to have been co-written by Harry - seem to depict a longing for the past, with the line "it's not the same as it was" repeated.

The music video shows him in an array of red outfits, including a sleeveless jumpsuit, later stripping to his boxers in one scene.

It shows him pursuing a love interest - with him constantly losing physical contact but continually taking the chance to get close whenever the opportunity presents itself.

This includes a scene near the beginning in which the pair are stood on a rotating circle, with them embracing, before being separated as they move in opposite directions.

As the video progresses though, the contact between the pair reduces, concluding with Harry dancing alone in a number of settings where he'd once had a partner.

The song and its video have attracted much praise for the singer-songwriter, with some fans dubbing him a "genius" while others said they "can't stop watching."

One viewer wrote in the comments on YouTube: "Harry is one of those very few artists nowadays who never disappoints! The song, the visuals, everything was so good."

Another fan offered their interpretation of the video, writing that it showed the relationship had been "going in circles," with him in a cycle of letting go but then coming back.

They continued in their analysis that it later shows Harry being unable to catch the love interest anymore, with the fan citing the chorus lyrics: "It's not the same as it was."

And fans have speculated the line "Leave America, two kids follow her" is about girlfriend Olivia, 38.

The actor - who was born and raised in the States - has two young children with her ex-husband Jason Sudeikis, 46. She's understood to have began dating Harry last year.
