It’s the conundrum the biggest pop stars in a band have to face: how do you stop the group from splitting at the height of your fame?
And it turns out Harry Styles sought counsel from Fleetwood Mac’s Mick Fleetwood on how to navigate a world of warring bandmates.
Mick, the face of Harry’s new make-up line, Pleasing, told Vogue they had a deep and meaningful about One Direction and his musical future, back in the day.
He said: “One of the earliest conversations Harry and I had, and one that continues today, is he looks at a band, entity, or a person, and thinks, ‘What allowed that to keep going? What allowed it not to lose the plot?’ That, as you know, is Fleetwood Mac’s story.
He identified with that and thought, ‘If that’s possible, then I can hold on to what I feel is true and what my next step will be, not only as a musician, but very, very much as a person’.”
While Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours album was famously recorded while romantic relationships in the band imploded, One Direction’s split – sorry, hiatus. Are we still saying it’s a hiatus? – in 2015 followed a falling out between the lads, leading Zayn Malik to quit.
Mick’s wise words did the trick, as Harry is without doubt the most successful solo artist from the band.
He learned from the best, Mick.
