Harry Potter TV series, Game of Thrones prequel coming to new streaming service Max

JK Rowling will act as executive producer of a new Harry Potter series. (Reuters)

Author JK Rowling's seven Harry Potter books have sold more than an unprecedented 600 million copies worldwide — and now, The Boy Who Lived is heading to a new streaming service with a new series.

The series is part of Warner Bros Discovery's plans for a new streaming platform called Max, which combines HBO Max with unscripted programming from Discovery.

The adaptation of the books into blockbuster movies starring Daniel Radcliffe grossed $US7.7 billion globally from 2001 to 2011.

There will be a new cast for the upcoming series.

Rowling will serve as the executive producer of the show and released a statement saying Max's commitment to preserving the integrity of her books was important to her.

"I'm looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long-form television series," she said.

The chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content, Casey Bloys, refused to be drawn on questions from reporters about how Rowling's involvement in the series might impact the production if people were reluctant to work with her.

Rowling has stirred controversy in recent years for comments that were criticised as transphobic. Harry Potter fan blogs and actors, including Radcliffe, have objected to her remarks.

Mr Bloys said in a statement that Harry Potter was a cultural phenomenon and there was an enduring love and thirst for the stories.

"We are delighted to give audiences the opportunity to discover Hogwarts in a whole new way."

Other new shows coming to Max include a new Game of Thrones prequel, which will be called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight.

When will the shows be available to stream?

Each season of the Potter series will be devoted to one book with plans for it to unfold over a decade.

But Warner Bros Discovery has not yet announced release dates for either show.

Author George RR Martin will serve as executive producer of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight.

The company said the series would be set 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
