Harry Potter's Rupert Grint compares JK Rowling to an aunt he 'doesn't agree with'

Rupert Grint shot to fame when he was cast as Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter film franchise just days before his twelfth birthday in 2000.

After winning the role as one of the main characters in the Warner Bros. movies, based on the famous books by JK Rowling, he filmed the much-loved films until 2010.

And the 33-year-old - who is father to a baby girl, named Wednesday G Grint, with partner Georgia Groome - has spoken out, again, on the creator of the wizarding world stories after Rowling publicly shared her disapproval of certain transgender terminology.

In a new interview, Rupert admitted that he 'doesn't agree with everything the writer says' as he distanced himself from the comments that led to her being accused of transphobia.

"I liken JK Rowling to an auntie. I don't necessarily agree with everything my auntie says, but she's still my auntie. It's a tricky one," he told The Sunday Times.

It is not the first time that Rupert has shared his thoughts on Rowling's comments.

He told The Times at the time: "Trans women are women. Trans men are men. We should all be entitled to live with love and without judgment.

"I firmly stand with the trans community and echo the sentiments expressed by many of my peers."

In June 2020, Rowling took to Twitter to tell her social media followers that she had an issue with the term 'people who menstruate' being used instead of 'women.'

"I'm sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?" Rowling tweeted.

Following her post, Rowling was branded 'transphobic' which led to the author with JK hitting back at her critics saying that "It isn't hate to speak the truth."

She later added that she respects 'every trans person's rights to live any way that feels authentic and comfortable to them.'

The Casual Vacancy writer then shared an essay discussing her thoughts on biological sex.

Rowling said her issues stemmed from being a survivor of abuse which gave her concerns about single sex spaces.

"I'm mentioning these things now not in an attempt to garner sympathy, but out of solidarity with the huge numbers of women who have histories like mine, who've been slurred as bigots for having concerns around single-sex spaces," she wrote.

Three months later the debate resurfaced when it was revealed that the villain in Rowling's latest book Troubled blood, written under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, was a male serial killer who dons a woman's coat and wig when killing his victims - this led to her facing accusations of transphobia once again.
