Harry Potter actor Miriam Margolyes remains in hospital after surgery and 'can't come home' yet

A Harry Potter star has explained she "can't come home" as she remains in hospital with a chest infection. Best known for her role as Professor Sprout in the popular films, Miriam Margolyes is having to remain in hospital longer than expected.

The 81-year-old underwent a £55,000 transcatheter aortic valve implantation procedure on May 5 and expected to be discharged by May 7. However, the actress was told she has to stay in hospital for a bit longer after contracting a chest infection.

In an update to her fans, she thanked people for their kind messages and explained why her release has been delayed, reports Yorkshire Live. She wrote: "I spoke too soon. Can’t come home yet.

"Probably tomorrow. But at least I’m resting. Love to all. Thank you for your lovely messages."

After her update fans were quick to wish her well. One person commented: "Thanks for the update, glad you are getting time to rest even if you are being made to do it. much love rest well and then onward."

Another wrote: "Sending lots of nursing healing blessings your way!" Whilst a third commented: "Sorry for delay in going home. You will bounce back. Wishing you a speedy recovery."

Miriam rose to fame thanks to her Harry Potter role, but has recently revealed she didn't enjoy the wizarding world. This came after she sent a personalised video message to a fan, wishing him a happy 30th birthday, on Cameo, where she introduced herself as “Professor Sprout from Harry Potter”.

Then she dropped the bombshell, saying: “I understand you and Chris are huge Harry Potter fans. Here’s the thing, I’m not.

“I’m not against it, I’m just not interested. I’ve never seen a film. I’ve never seen the books, I’ve never read them. I just pocket the money when it comes and I’m very grateful for it.

She continued: "I think that JK Rowling is a terrific writer, and I'm sure that Harry Potter's world is a good world. But it's not my world.

"I have to step very gingerly over the gap between you and me, and hope that you'll understand that despite the fact that I'm headmistress of Hufflepuff and you're in Gryffindor, I don't really want to talk about 'Harry Potter.'"

She also admitted she wasn't hugely impressed with the pay she received for the role. Speaking to the Metro, she said: "I never made Harry Potter millions. I think the three or four main people did and they deserve it but my character didn’t.

“I was only in two and I only got £60,000 for being Professor Sprout but I’m not grumbling... now. I grumbled then but it made me very famous.”
