Harry Newman out of Grand Final and World Cup as Leeds Rhinos and England suffer latest blow

Harry Newman has confirmed his season is finished. The Leeds Rhinos and England centre, a star performer for the Rhinos, has confirmed that that he has been forced to have hamstring surgery, ruling him out of the World Cup and Grand Final.

It's a cruel blow for the youngster, widely regarded as one of the best young players in the world. It's a miserable end to a frustrating season for Newman, with injury and suspension restricting him to just seven appearances this year. He missed the start of the campaign with a hamstring issue, returned but then missed another period with another hamstring setback and has continued to struggle all year.

His absence is a hammer blow for both club and country. The Rhinos are in the Grand Final next Saturday while he was set to be part of Shaun Wane's squad in the Autumn. England are already set to be without the likes of Alex Walmsley, Liam Farrell and potentially others.

Posting on Instagram, Newman said: " There’s highs and lows in sport and that’s the nature of it. I wanted everyone to hear this from me that my 2022 season has come to an end. For a player this is very hard to accept having been through some tough challenges over the last 2 seasons.

"Next weekend marks 2 years since I fractured my leg and it has been 2 years of ups and downs. I am absolutely gutted knowing I’ve worked to hard in my rehab to try and get back for the back end of the season and to give myself a chance of playing in the World Cup. All of that has been ripped away from me and I have undergone surgery this morning to fix a hamstring issue which I suffered on my right leg earlier in the year which has now appeared on the left. Luckily I have a great support network around me and staff coaches and players to help me get back to where I belong.

"6 months to get right and be ready fitter and better than ever before. Finally I want to wish the boys all the best at Old Trafford next weekend. This club is back where is belongs competing for trophies. See you all there Rhinos fans and Thankyou for sticking my the team and myself all season!"
