Harry Maguire to hold Erik ten Hag talks with Man Utd boss in two minds over captain

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire will reportedly hold talks with manager Erik ten Hag regarding his future at the club this summer having fallen out of favour this season.

The club's captain has seen his role in the team reduced, with just 16 starts in all competitions due to the emergence of Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane's partnership in defence. The pair have largely been successful although the United captain has been required in recent weeks due to injuries to both first choices.

Now, according to ESPN, Maguire will hold talks with ten Hag regarding his future, with the England man expected to evaluate his options before making a decision regarding his long-term career at the club. Sources have claimed that United will listen to bids for the defender, with West Ham mooted as being a potential destination for the 29-year-old.

Last month, The Athletic reported that the former Leicester defender is determined to fight for his place at the club, with ten Hag having publicly praised the England defender for his influence.

Ten Hag said: "He has an important role, he is the captain, he leads, he communicates with the manager, motivates the team, he's the example in the training space. I'm thinking about improving this team and these players, that's my job with the coaching staff and the players,"

Maguire took the captaincy within six months of joining United in 2019, with third and second placed finishes during his first two campaigns as skipper. However, the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo provided Maguire with a problem in his role, as Ronaldo reportedly asked for his demotion from from the captaincy.

Maguire remains a regular starter for England, with his performances at the World Cup underlining his value as a player at the top level. He could be revitalised this summer, amid the potential arrival of Harry Kane at United, with the pair thought to have a strong relationship from their time spent together with the Three Lions.

He has been named in Gareth Southgate's latest England squad for their summer internationals against Malta and North Macedonia, with the games providing a chance to thrive in a setup where he is valued highly for his contributions.

Speaking in March, Southgate outlined his value to the squad, saying: “Harry has got two World Cup winners currently ahead of him in the (United) team and that’s the benchmark. He dealt with it brilliantly in Qatar. His performances were exceptional.

“He had a lot of pressure going into those games because the spotlight was on him, but he was without doubt one of our best players in the tournament.”
