Harry Maguire spotted limping on way out of Wembley after Germany horror show

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire was spotted limping after England's 3-3 draw against Germany on Monday night.

Maguire, 29, had a game to forget against Hansi Flick's team, as he conceded a sloppy penalty at the beginning of the second half. The defender's display has raised more doubts over whether he should be part of England's 26-man squad for the World Cup in Qatar.

Maguire appeared to pick up a knock after his costly foul on Jamal Musiala and was filmed limping out of Wembley. Gareth Southgate also told reporters: "John [Stones] is feeling something with hamstring, and I think Harry is feeling something a little bit as well."

England skipper Harry Kane added: "H [Maguire] had a pretty decent injury at the end there and he played another five or 10 minutes on almost one leg. So great character from him, really proud of him for that."

It's too early to say whether Maguire will be fit for United's game against Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday afternoon, as Erik ten Hag's doctors will need to assess his complaint. Further information will be provided by Ten Hag in Friday's press conference.

Although Maguire is not currently in United's strongest XI due to the emergence of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, Ten Hag will still want him fit over the coming weeks. The Red Devils will have at least nine fixtures to fulfil during October.

As well as City, United are set to play the likes of Everton, Tottenham, Newcastle and Chelsea over the next month. There is also a chance the postponed games against Crystal Palace and Leeds could be squeezed into October's schedule, but this seems unlikely.

Maguire has received criticism for his performance against Germany, but Luke Shaw has defended his teammate. "I will be honest, it is a tough period at the moment," Shaw told BBC Football Daily when asked about Maguire.

"Of course Harry is an amazing player, an amazing character. He has taken a lot of stick, probably more than I have ever seen before in football but he never hides away.

"He is always there. You can have people that can hide away and not want to be in the spotlight but he keeps putting himself in the spotlight and it shows the strength and character he has got because, come on, everyone knows that he is an unbelievable player."

Southgate has also defended Maguire. He said: "I know everyone will focus on Harry... but I think in these moments we've got to back our best and our most experienced players, unless we're in a situation where it's almost untenable and impossible to pick them."

Maguire has apologised for Monday's error on Instagram. He wrote: "Mistakes are part of the game, I apologise. Great fight back and spirit to get us back into the game by the lads. Take the positives and look forward to Qatar. The tough times will make us stronger."
