Harry Maguire praises unsung hero for 'important' contribution in Manchester United vs Everton

Harry Maguire has praised Christian Eriksen for 'taking the sting' out of the game in Manchester United's win against Everton.

Eriksen suffered an ankle injury against Reading in the FA Cup in late January and he made his return from the sidelines against Everton on Saturday afternoon when replacing Jadon Sancho with around 15 minutes remaining in the game. The midfielder only returned to full training earlier in the week and he received a warm reception when entering the pitch.

Although United had a two-goal advantage when Eriksen was substituted on for Sancho, he helped to control the game in the latter stages of the contest and Maguire thought his contribution from the bench was important.

"Nothing is ever comfortable in the Premier League, to be honest," Maguire told MUTV. "It should have been comfortable, that's for sure, but when the game is at 1-0 it's not, you know anything can happen in this league.

"Everyone has that bit of quality and they're dangerous from set-pieces and headers. You know they're going to have a moment, so we had to kill the game off at half-time. The first half was excellent, great football.

"It was front foot, numerous chances, we controlled the game, we played in their half and the counter press was excellent. the game should be done and I can stand here and say it was comfortable, although it was a controlled performance.

"We obviously thoroughly deserved the three points. The only thing missing was more goals. If we came in at half-time 4-0 up, nobody would have any complaints really, the amount of chances we created, it was six, seven or eight good chances.

"I think the second half they didn't have a chance. Christian [Eriksen] came on the pitch and it was really good to see him coming on, taking the ball and he took the sting out of the game, which I felt was really important at the time."
