Harry Maguire accused of 'laughing at everyone' and 'telling wife Man Utd think he's good'

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been slammed by Rafael van Der Vaart after his error against Bournemouth at the weekend.

Maguire was turned inside out by Junior Stanislas for the opening goal but his team-mates spared his blushes with five goals in a convincing win.

Despite their 5-2 victory, the spotlight shone on Maguire, who became the world’s most expensive defender in his move from Leicester last summer.

And former Spurs star Van der Vaart was scathing in his criticism on Dutch TV, claiming that Maguire “tells his wife” that United “really believe he’s good” and adding that he believes he “laughs at everyone”.

Asked about Maguire’s error during a show on Dutch TV station Ziggo, Van Der Vaart blasted: “I think Maguire goes home every day and tells his wife: ‘I screw up, but I earn so much. They really believe I’m good.’

“I really think so, he laughs at everyone.”

It is not the first time the midfielder has slammed Maguire.

Back in October, he compared the former Leicester man to a Sunday League player.

“He can do something, but if he is worth so much money, Virgil van Dijk is worth £300million,” Van der Vaart told Ziggo Sport.

“If I am going to play with the amateurs on Sunday afternoon, I can easily find three who can do this. I mean that seriously.

“A bit silly to say, but I really think so.”

At full-time, he was overheard telling Bournemouth defender Nathan Ake that he “needed a left-footed centre-half”.

Asked about his fellow Dutchman and the exchange Van Der Vaart said: “That is nice if there is no crowd and no music after the game. Then you hear things like this.

“A transfer? I hope for him, I think he’s doing very well. Why not?”
